Want to get started researching your own family tree? These sites will help you get started:

Put It On The Web

Here's where you can find out how to put your own family tree on the Web:

  • Reunion (Sure, I've already listed it, but it deserves it)
  • Mac OS X (Mac OS X is great operating system for any genealogist, especially those who wish to put stuff up on the web. That's because Mac OS X supports PDF system-wide, so if you can print it, you can make a PDF and have it up on the Web in seconds. Which is excellent for sharing charts and graphs)
  • PHP Gedcom Viewer (Some understanding of MySQL web site administration would be helpful)
  • The GEDCOM format (A nitty gritty guide to the standardized format used in genealogy trading)
  • MySQL (The database engine behind it all)
  • Apache Web Server (The Web server used on this site)
  • PHP Hypertext Preprocessor (An Apache module with incredibly powerful server-side scripting capabilities)
  • GED2HTML (A program to convert GEDCOM files to static HTML. Available for Mac, Unix, and Windows)
  • LifeLines An open source genealogy editor. Has an extremely powerful reporting and scripting engine. Mostly command line based, but people have written a GUI for it (which I haven't tried).

Many genealogy programs now offer a feature to export to HTML directly (Reunion does). Also, Web sites like RootsWeb.com and Ancestry.com both allow you to submit a GEDCOM for hosting.
